Book launch and talk by Sheena Wenham (Holm Hall, Sat. 28th February 2026)
Come along to the Holm Hall on Saturday 28th February at 2:30pm to receive your signed copy of “Flo, a Victorian Lady and her visit to Orkney in 1866.”
Author Sheena Wenham will be presenting her newly released book, joined by Tom and Rhonda Muir from Orkneyology Publishers. This special event offers a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Flo’s fascinating journey and meet those behind the publication.
Copies will be available to purchase on the day, priced at £15.99 for the paperback and £19.99 for the hardback (cash only). All proceeds will go to Holm Community Heritage at St Nicholas Kirk.
We look forward to welcoming you for an afternoon of local history, storytelling with refreshments available.

Flashback on 2009...

Launch of the Churchill Barriers Exhibition at St Nicholas Kirk
Today we launched the Building of the Barriers Exhibition!
This exclusive exhibition offers a unique photographic history into the work involved in completing the major building project; the Churchill Barriers.
Open to the public everyday from Monday 15th May, 10am-6pm, at the St Nicholas Kirk.

Family history at the St Nicholas Kirk
Peter MacClure came on tour on 29 June 2022. His great-grandparents, Robert Allen and Mary Jane Gambles married in 1877 and lived in Ducrow for a few years until they emigrated to New Zealand. Mary Jane was a daughter of Jean Linnay from Ducrow. Robert was born in Sandwick but his mother later married Robert Eunson and moved to Thistlequoy in Holm. He greatly appreciated his visit to the Kirk and to Ducrow, and looking through the Holm Heritage archive.

The Ould Kirk in the Blue Door (23rd Sept - 28th Sept)

offered to help during the week. If you know of anyone with items to
take along to the shop, probably mid – week is best, when stocks are
going down. Raffle donations are still welcome, as will be baking or
confectionery to sell.

PEACE - LAND
Peace- Land : reflection-remembrance-response.
A visitor to Orkney, by great good fortune I attended Peace- Land in
the tranquil setting of St Nicholas Kirk by the shore in East Holm, on
Thursday 20th June.
The narrated piece of one hundred verses, written by Gabrielle Barnby, was supported by four striking glass panels that told the story of the German high seas fleet which went to its ultimate fate in the waters of Scapa Flow one hundred years ago.
Gabrielle’s gentle reading was interspersed with verses translated into German, read by Andrea Freund, and a section in Orcadian spoken by Marlene Mainland. The evocative music of the Borealis hand bell group and the violas of Elizabeth Duncan and Francesca Barnby created a haunting atmosphere as the evening sun filtered into St Nicholas and lit up Ralph Robinson’s glowing glass panels.
Gabrielle’s depth of research was impressive, catching deep truths, and I was left feeling profoundly moved by the flaws in humans which stain our history.
Keep memory honest, And peace safe, A whisper, In the noust of the heart.

Warm winter glow at the Ould Kirk...
A warm glow filled St Nicholas Auld Kirk on Sunday afternoon as the building came alive with a Christmas Concert organised and beautifully delivered by Elizabeth Duncan and Kirsty Drever to showcase their students, young and talented musicians and singers.
The body of the Kirk was packed with only standing room left as Athole Thomson welcomed the guests while mulled wine and Christmassy home bakes were served by Santa’s helpers!
The concert included some well-known tunes, Ding Dong Merrily on High, Carol of the Drum, Jingle Bells, O Come, All Ye Faithful, Joy to the World, and many more.
Among the beautifully played piano and fiddle tunes, we were also
treated to an energetic set of fiddle tunes by a brother and sister duo.
Kirsty’s Holm and Birsay singing groups joined forces with It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas and a Coldplay song, Christmas Lights.
Elizabeth and Kirsty also treated us to a tune they played beautifully together on their fiddles.
As the concert drew to a close, Marlene Mainland rounded up the event and introduced our Memory Tree which will be available in the Vestry throughout the Festive Season for folk to hang a heart of remembrance on its branches. She then recited a very moving poem entitled Memory which gave us all time to reflect on the memories of loved ones before moving into our final song.
As for the “warm glow”, Andrew Drever commented on the fact that this was the first time he’d known of a concert being performed while everyone continued to wear their coats, scarfs and hats! He then went on to thank the organisers, the musicians and the audience for supporting the event before finally wishing everyone a Very Merry Christmas.
Thank you to all that turned out and supported the event, purchased raffle tickets, providing the home bakes and keeping it running to schedule. Thanks also to Tommy and Erlend for keeping the light on (well almost!) An enjoyable afternoon which raised the magnificent sum of £604 towards the preservation and restoration of the building.
